What I Wore on Saturday, January 23, 2016

by mary January 24, 2016

On Saturday, January 23, I wore this really fun 1940s/1950s green corduroy vest with wooden buttons, tan 1960s sweater, & a 1940s green corduroy & wood purse.  All 3 came from Dorotheas' Closet Vintage.

The label on the vest says "College Teens"; I tried looking this up on the Internet, but all I could find was a dress from the 1950s with the same label.  I really like how the vest & purse go together, even though they didn't really come that way.

I wore several pieces of my jewelry with my outfit.  The first is a necklace I made a year or so ago.  I fabricated this necklace using copper, 2 gemstones (agate & ocean jasper) & a moss agate gemstone bead.  The agate is set with a partial bezel & 2 prongs; the ocean jasper is bezel set.  I hammered the copper base & patinated it with liver of sulfur.

I also wore a pair of earrings I fabricated earlier in the week out of copper & keys from a vintage portable typewriter that I got at a garage sale & moss agate gemstone beads.

The base is copper that I ran through a rollermill with wire screen & then patinated with liver of sulfur.  The keys are bezel set.

I really like the way the copper & gemstones in the jewelry complement the green corduroy & wood in the vest & purse.

What I Wore on Tuesday, January 19, 2016

by mary January 20, 2016

On Tuesday, January 19, I wore this warm & cuddly 1950s wool sweater with mink collar & rhinestone & pearl closure.  The sweater also has little pearl & rhinestone "buttons" at the ends of the sleeves.

With my vintage sweater, I wore a necklace I made recently in a class at the Des Moines Art Center.

I love this stone, but unfortunately, cannot remember its name right now.  I prong-set it in sterling silver on a base of 14 guage square sterling silver wire, & used 2 small pieces of round sterling tubes for the bails.

I also wore a pair of earrings I made quite some time ago.

The gemstones are amethyst & tiger eye.  I was especially intrigued by the shape of the tiger eye stones, & so far, have not been able to part with the earrings primarily because of them!

What I Wore on Thursday, January 14, 2016

by mary January 14, 2016

On the 2nd Thursday of every month, I dress in vintage clothes & help out at the Calvin Community health center monthly birthday party for residents.  To celebrate the new year, for January's party I wore this really fun 1960s Judy Bond lurex skirt & blouse, plus a feathered tilt hat from the 1940s.

I looked up Judy Bond on the internet, & found a somewhat similar lurex outfit from the 60s.

I also found a photo & article that tallked about union workers striking at Judy Bond for unfair labor practices in Connecticut & Alabama in the 60s.  Apparently, at one time, "Don't buy Judy Bond blouses" was a common slogan.  I'm generally pro-union, so I was a disappointed to read that.  On the other hand, it reminds me how important labor unions were to garment workers & other workers.

With my vintage outfit, I wore 2 pieces of silver & rose quartz colored jewelry that I made this last year.

The first is a necklace I made from an old key chain fob that I picked up at the What Cheer flea market.

I also used pieces of vintage rosary chain & an old key to complement the colors in the fob & the key theme.

And, I wore a pair of earrings I made from vintage rosary centers, black & rose quartz crystal beads.

What I Wore on Friday, January 8, 2016

by mary January 8, 2016

On Friday, January 8, I wore this really fun 1950s Paddle & Saddle Sportswear vest that I got at Dorothea's Closet Vintage recently.

Paddle & Saddle Sportswear vests in the '50s were often part of 2 piece separate outfits.  I found an ad from 1953 on-line that showed a vest very similar to mine worn with matching pedal pushers.

To complement my vest, I wore a necklace I made using vintage watch parts.

I also used several different kinds of vintage chain for the necklace, including watch fob & rosary.

And, I wore a pair of asymmetrical earrings I made out of vintage watch parts & watch fob clasps.

I really like working with old watch parts & old watch fobs -- I love all the detailed gears & parts.
