What I Wore on Sunday, August 14, 2016

by mary September 11, 2016

On Sunday, August 14, I wore this really fun dress that I got recently (on sale) at Zumi's, here in Des Moines.

I love the colors & uneven hemline on this dress, plus it's super comfortable!  Poor Belle was still wearing her cone at that point; the next day we "liberated" her!

The fun purse is from the 1960s that I got at Dorothea's Closet Vintage a couple of years ago.

With my fun dress, I wore 2 pieces of jewelry I made.  The first is a necklace I made from an old hotel key fob that I picked up at a vintage clothing store in Boise, Idaho last summer.

I also wore a fun pair of earrings I made out of old catalin game pieces that I picked up at a garage sale last summer.

Catalin is one of the early plastics, developed in 1928 & popular in the 1930s.  I love the color of these vintage catalin pieces.

What I Wore on Thursday, August 11, 2016

by mary September 4, 2016

On Thursday, August 11, I wore this amazing 1940's dress that I got at Dorothea's Closet Vintage several years ago.  I'm not sure if it's rayon or jersey or a combination, but it's wonderfully comfortable!

The dress is missing its original belt, so I used a black silk belt that matched the color of the buttons.  The other thing I love about this dress is that it's longer in the back than in the front, although you can't really tell that in this picture.

I don't remember where I got the hat, but I love how it goes with the dress.  The purse was one of my mother's.

With my fabulous dress, I wore 2 pieces of jewelry I've made.

The first is a necklace I made out of a vintage Avon pendant.

I added a vintage picture on the back; I believe the photo is from WW2.

I also wore a pair of earrings I made from some new-old-stock (NOS) beads I found at a bead shop in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.

I just love NOS beads!

What I Wore on Tuesday, August 9, 2016

by mary August 25, 2016

On Tuesday, August 9, I wore this fabulous 1950's eyelet dress that I got at Dorothea's Closet Vintage a couple of years ago, & a patent leather purse I'm pretty sure I also got from Dorothea's Closet Vintage.  I especially love the wide collar & big bow on the front of this dress.  The belt was missing for the dress; while it was probably made of the same material as the dress, I decided to add a vintage black belt (also from D's Closet Vintage) for contrast instead.

According to the Fashion Guild website, eyelet material is characterized by small cut-outs surrounded by embroidery, generally in cotton & light colors; & often used in summer dresses because of it's built-in "air-conditioning".  In terms of its history, I found one reference in a blog, "Vintage Pretties" that suggested it probably originated in the 1700s.

With my outfit, I wore 2 pieces of jewelry I made.  The first is a necklace I made from a broken vintage necklace, vintage chain, & tiny crystal beads from several broken necklaces that I wire-wrapped.

I also wore a pair of earrings I made out of parts of other broken jewelry.

I liked the way the black accessories contrasted with the cream color of the dress.

What I Wore on Saturday, August 6, 2016

by mary August 20, 2016

On Saturday, August 6, I wore this fun "80s does 40s" dress that I found at the Majestic Lion antique mall that used to be here in Des Moines. The purse is a Kelly-style bag I picked up at Dorothea's Closet several years ago.  I think at the time, I bought maybe a half dozen similar bags in different colors & sizes that had all come from the same original owner.

Although I don't do many 80's clothes, I really liked the colors & pattern on this one, the sleeves, & the way the skirt flairs at the bottom.  I guess the other reason I liked it was the fact that it does have a 40s feel.  One of the interesting things about the 1980s is how nostalgia for the styles & tailoring of the mid-century influenced fashion.

With my dress, I'm wearing 2 pieces of jewelry I made recently.

The first is a necklace made from an old pop bottle top (the kind with a cork insert) that I prong-set in copper.  I love the names of the old soda/pop -- I don't remember "Lemonette" soda, but love the looks of the bottle top!

I also wore a pair of earrings that I made out of old Bakelite game chips that I got at an antique mall here in Des Moines a year or so ago.

What I Wore on Wednesday, August 3, 2016

by mary August 17, 2016

On Wednesday, August 3, I wore this amazing 1940s dress that I got at Dorothea's Closet Vintage several years ago.

I absolutely love the colors on this dress, as well as the way it feels on!  And it even has its original belt!  I'm also carrying a 60's purse & wearing a 60's hat that I got at Dorothea's Closet Vintage, my favorite vintage clothing shop!

With my 40s dress, I'm wearing 3 pieces of jewelry I made -- one based on each of the colors in the dress.

I made this necklace using an old Nehi pop bottle top -- the kind with a cork insert.

According to the Mississippi Business Journal, the Nehi Bottling Company was founded in 1927.  I mostly remember Nehi from Radar's fondness for grape Nehi in the television show, MASH.

I also wore this Mexican-themed charm bracelet that I made with old Mexican coins, as well as Cracker Jack/gumball charms & gemstones.

Finally, I wore a pair of earrings I made with old bakelite game chips that I got at an antique mall here in Des Moines.

I like the way each piece of jewelry complements a color in the dress.

What I Wore on Saturday, July 30, 2016

by mary August 12, 2016

On Saturday, July 30, I wore this amazing 1940's "New Look" taffeta dress that I got at Dorothea's Closet Vintage some years ago.

The hat, belt (the dress was missing it's original belt), & purse are also from Dorothea's Closet.  One of my favorate things about this dress, aside from the print of white flowers with blue square centers, are the big pockets in the skirt!

With my dress, I wore 2 pieces of jewelry I've made.

I made this necklace out of a link from a broken Paris souvenir bracelet, an old perfume bottle charm that I found at a shop in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, & other French-themed charms & French coins.  The gemstone beads are lapis to pick up the blue in the souvenir link.

I made these earrings out of blue bakelite game chips that I found at an antique mall here in Des Moines, plus little square links from a broken necklace.  I like the way the little silver squares in the earrings pick up the squares in the dress pattern.

This is probably one of my favorite vintage dresses that I've gotten over the years at Dorothea's Closet.

What I Wore on Sunday, July 24, 2016

by mary August 4, 2016

On Sunday, July 24, a friend & I attended "Rock of Ages" at the Des Moines Community Playhouse.  "Rock of Ages" is a rock/jukebox musical built around classic rock songs of the 1980s, especially from the famous glam metal bands of the 80s.  Although the dress I'm wearing isn't from the 1980s (more like from the early 2000's), at least it matches the colors in this fabulous 1980's purse that I got a couple of years ago at Dorothea's Closet Vintage.  I love the colors in this purse!

With my fabulous 1980's purse, I wore 3 pieces of jewelry I've made in the last year that picked up the colors in my dress & purse.

I made this necklace using vintage bakelite game discs that I got at an antique mall here is Des Moines, & vintage chain & beads.

I made the charm bracelet using other vintage bakelite game discs from the same find, & some beads that complemented the colors of the discs.  These discs remind me a lot of old tiddly-wink shooters!

And I wore thsi fun pair of earrings I made out of old lithograph tin speedboats that I found at an antique mall outside Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

I love the graphics on these little boats!

What I Wore on Thursday, July 28, 2016

by mary July 29, 2016

On Thursday, July 28, I wore this very fun 1950's red, white & blue dress that I got at Dorothea's Closet Vintage several years ago, & a fun 1940's tile purse I found on Ooh La La Vintage last year.

I love the buttons on this dress, especially the ones on the arms just down from the shoulder that stick out when you have the dress on!

With my fun outfit, I wore 2 pieces of jewelry I've made.

I made this necklace out of half-circles I cut out of vintage lithograph tin from an old doll house, plus wooden half-circles & beads from a broken vintage bracelet I found at an antique shop in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

I really love the patterns on the old lithograph tin.  I think these pieces came from the doll house's kitchen.

I also wore a pair of earrings I made recently out of vintage bakelite game pieces I found at an antique shop here in Des Moines, & little silvertone metal "4-leaf clover" pieces from a broken vintage necklace.

I like the way the discs in the earrings echo the buttons on the dress.

What I Wore on Saturday, July 23, 2018

by mary July 25, 2016

On Saturday, July 23, I wore this amazing flowered print dress from the 1930s.   I especially love the caplet sleeves & the ruching along the shoulders.  The original belt was no longer with the dress, so I used a 1980s belt I got at Dorothea's Closet Vintage that matched the colors of the flowers!

I found this dress at a garage sale that we just happened to check out while we were out for a morning walk with Belle, our beagle.  It had belonged to the woman's great aunt.

With my outfit, I wore 2 pieces of jewelry I've made.

I made this necklace using a vintage watch part, an old Cracker Jack/gumball compass charm, & watch fob chain.

I thought it was so cool how well the little compass fit into the watch part where I presume a gear might have been originally!  I liked too how the orangish red of the compass worked with the colors of the flowers on the dress.

I also wore a pair of earrings I made out of vintage amber crystal beads from a broken necklace I found at a flea market & wire.  One of the things I really like about these earrings is that they are really light, even though they have some nice length to them.

What I Wore on Thursday, July 21

by mary July 22, 2016

On Thursday, July 21, I wore this fun 1960s sheath dress that I got at Dorothea's Closet Vintage a couple of years ago.

I love the colors of the dress & it's super comfortable for the hot weather we are having -- 90+ degrees with heat indexes over 100 degrees!  I got the hat several summers ago in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin; it's not vintage, but I thought the colors fo the straw flowers really worked with the flowers on the dress!

With my dress, I wore a necklace I made last fall, using a vintage hotel key fob, vintage rosary beads, & a small vintage key that I wire-wrapped.  I found the key fob at a vintage clothing store last summer in Boise, Idaho.

The key fob feels like it's made of leather.  They sure don't make hotel keys like that anymore!

I also wore a pair of earrings I made out of old catalin game chips that I got at a garage sale last summer.

I really like the color & texture of these old catalin chips.  I also used links from a vintage chain for these earrings.
