What I Wore on Thursday, July 14, 2016

by mary July 14, 2016

I see that I haven't posted anything for almost a month.  It's been an off summer for us, as our little beagle, Belle, has been down at the Veterinary Health Services at the University of Missouri-Columbia getting radiation treatment for a tumor on her left front paw.  She's been there since June 20, & will be there a few more days to finish her treatment.  In the interim, we've been visiting her weekends when we can & missing her terribly.  We also talk to the Health Center & to the student she is staying with to hear how she is doing.  That's pretty much dominated our attention.

Today, though, I volunteered at Calvin Community's birthday party for residents with birthdays in July, & wore one of my summer vintage outfits, so I thought I would do a "What I Wore On . . . " blog post.  So here goes . . .

On Thursday, July 14, I wore this really fun 1960s black & white gingham drop-waist dress that I found at an antique mall in Boise, Idaho last summer.

I also got the 60s daisy pin at the same antique mall, but different booth.  I love this dress, & remember wearing drop-waist dresses like these back in the 60s!  My hat & purse are also from the 60s & come from Dorothea's Closet Vintage.

With my outfit, I wore 2 pieces of jewelry I've made.  I made the charm bracelet out of small vintage white dice, & added a Cracker Jack/gumball good luck charm & black beads to match the dots in the dice.

I made this asymmetrical pair of earrings with the same size white dice & black bead for one earring, & a black dice & white bead for the other.

I really like vintage dice, & thought the colors & shapes were a good complement for my 60s dress.

What I Wore on Saturday, May 21, 2016

by mary May 27, 2016

On Saturday, May 21, I wore this amazing 1940s novelty print dress with butterfly sleeves & peplum!  I picked up this dress several years ago at Dorothea's Closet Vintage Clothing.  It's one of my very favorite dresses from the 1940s!

I looked up the history of butterfly sleeves on-line, & several sites suggested it's origin was the national costume of the Phillipines.  I also looked up peplums, which appear to have been around since the 1800s, & were popular in the 1930s & 1940s.

With my dress, I wore a necklace I made just recently.  The rhinestone studded focal piece comes from a vintage broken necklace I got in a lot of vintage chain at the Des Moines Fairground Flea Market.  I added black, gray & clear crystal beads, & vintage chain.

I also wore a pair of earrings I made some time ago, also using black crystal beads & links from a broken vintage necklace.

What I Wore on Saturday, May 7, 2016

by mary May 11, 2016

On Saturday, May 6, I wore this fabulous flower print dress from the 1930s that I got at Dorothea's Closet Vintage clothing several years ago, & this great hat that I got from the owner of a bed & breakfast a friend & I stayed at last summer in Cedarburg, Wisconsin!

The material covering the buttons on the dress is a bit worn, as is the backing on the belt, but I still love this dress for the print & the way it feels on!

With my dress, I wore 2 pieces of jewelry I made this spring.

I made the necklace out of 1/2 circles that I cut out of vintage lithograph tin & little wooden 1/2 circles & beads that I found at an antique mall just outside Manitowoc, Wisconsin a couple of summers ago.

I made the earrings out of copper discs that I domed & enamelled in a class I took at the Art Center this spring.  I thought they really turned out to be quite fun!

My little photographic friend is Belle, our beagle.  She's almost 7 years old, but thinks she's still a puppy & loves to be photographed!

What I Wore on Saturday, April 30, 2016

by mary May 4, 2016

On Saturday, April 30, I wore this fun 1940s lounge/smoking jacket that I got at Dorothea's Closet Vintage several years ago.

I especially love the subtle pattern in the jacket, as well as the contrasting lining that shows on the sleeve!  I suspect this may have originally come with a pair of wide-leg palazzo pants.

With my jacket, I wore 2 necklaces that I made recently.

I made this first necklace out of a vintage Bakelite fur clip that was missing it's back that I prong set in copper that I had patinated with liver of sulfer.

I made the second necklace out of a piece of authentic sea glass that a friend had given me.  She & her husband travel & routinely collect it from various beaches.  For this necklace, I "set" the sea glass by crocheting around it with wire.

I'm a huge fan of both Bakelite & sea glass, so really enjoyed being able to make both of these necklaces!

On Saturday, April 23, 2016, I wore this fabulous 1930s dress with butterfly sleeves that I got at Dorothea's Closet Vintage clothing years ago.

I especially love the flower print & the drape of this dress.  Here's a close-up of the print.

With this amazing dress, I wore 2 pieces of jewelry I made last year.

The first is a Big Band era music-themed charm bracelet.

I especially love the little Cracker Jack/gumball record & album cover charms!  They're really hard to find, but so fun!

I also wore a pair of earrings I made from discs that I cut out of vintage lithograph tin (like the stuff they used to make TV trays & other things out of).

I like the way the colors on the earrings & bracelet pick up the colors in the dress!

What I Wore on Saturday, April 16, 2016

On Saturday, April 16, 2016, I wore this really fun 1950s/1960s jersy dress & jacket by Shelton Strollers & a 1950s platter hat labeled "The New Utica, Des Moines, Iowa -- I picked up both from Dorothea's Closet Vintage.

I looked up Shelten Stroller dresses online, & I found several for sale, as well as a August 1965 McCalls' ad that described the Shelton Stroller dress as "The Most Beautiful Practical Dress"!  I also looked up "The New Utica" shop, but all I could find was a short description & picture indicating that "The Utica" shop opened in 1904.  Someone who has lived in Des Moines all their life told me that at some point, the shop was renamed "The New Utica".

With my outfit, I wore 2 pieces of jewelry I made last year.

The first is a charm bracelet made from Cracker Jack/Gumball charms.

I especially adore the little bone charm!

I also wore a pair of earrings I made from vintage lithograph tin & sodalite gemstone nuggets.

I love the pattern on the tin, & wish I had more of it!

What I Wore on Thursday, April 14, 2016

by mary April 17, 2016

Thursday was Calvin Community's April Birthday Party, & I wore this fabulous last 1940's spring dress, & 1950's hat & gloves, & carried a fun plastic tile clutch from the 1940s.

This is probably one of my favorite 1940s dresses -- I love the neckline & the daisy trim, & the way it drapes over your body!

With my spring dress, I wore one of the necklaces I made last year.

I made the necklace from a vintage Willie WiredHand key chain that I found at the What Cheer Flea Market.  I used mother-of-pearl rosary beads, pink crystal beads, & vintage silver links for the chain, & dangled a key from the back -- all to complement the pendant.  Here's a close-up of the fun pendant.

I thought the necklace added a fun quirky touch to my outfit!

What I Wore on Sunday, April 10, 2016

by mary April 14, 2016

On Sunday, April 10, my mother-in-law & I went to the Des Moines Playhouse to see Sister Act.  I wore this super fun 60s gold jacket & carried this amazing 60's gold vinyl purse with the letter "M" for Mary on it!

I got both the jacket & purse through a Facebook vintage buy-sell-trade group I belong to.  I got the hat through the group as well -- not sure when it's from, but sure like it!

With my fun outfit, I wore 2 necklaces I made last year.  I made this first one using a vintage dragon charm for the pendant.  I don't know if it's made out of bone, or faux bone, but I loved the image.  For the chain, I used sections of vintage brass & celluloid chain, & bone beads.

I made the 2nd necklace out of a vintage key & a heart charm; for the chain, I used sections of vintage brass watch fob chain & watch parts.

We had a great time at the Playhouse -- the musical was great & the cast was fabulous!

What I Wore on Saturday, April 9, 2016

by mary April 11, 2016

On Saturday, April 9, 2016, I wore this fun "perfect for Spring" late 1970s/early 1980s dress by Diane Von Furstenberg.

Diane Von Furstenberg wea a Belgian born American fashion designer.  She started designing women's clothes in 1970, & is most famous for the jersey wrap dress she introduced in 1974.  I especially love the way this dress feels on, & its soft pastel flower pattern.  I picked this dress up at Dorothea's Closet Vintage about a year or so ago.

With my dress, I wore one of my newest necklaces.

I made this necklace this spring out of discs that I cut out of vintage lithograph tin that probably came from a small box or TV tray (remember those)!  I thought the flower pattern on the necklace complimented the flower print in the dress.

What I Wore on Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016

by mary April 1, 2016

On Easter Sunday, I wore this lovely 1950s sweater & carried a fun little vinyl 60's purse -- I got both from Dorothea's Closet Vintage several years ago.  I especially love the big wooden buttons on the sweater & the little umbrellas on the purse!  I remember having a purse similar to this when I was a little girl, except it had butterflies instead of umbrellas under the clear vinyl; it was my favorite purse as a child!

My Easter bonnet, although not vintage, matched the color of the sweater perfectly, & felt just right for Easter!  It was a gift from my mother-in-law several years ago when we had lunch at a tea room in Valley Junction.

With my Easter outfit, I wore a pair of earrings I made from vintage wooden buttons that I picked up at the Fairgrounds Flea Market here in Des Moines.

What could be more perfect with the big wooden buttons on the sweater than wooden button earrings!
